As the anticipation of the season transforms into celebration and reflection, I want to wish everyone warm holiday greetings with goodness to come in the new year.

It's always a busy time of year in the Barthel household. In addition to celebrating Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, yesterday marked the beginning of my 37th revolution around the sun, making it a triad of festivities enjoyed with family.

There are many good things coming in the new year, for all of us. May there be peace on Earth.

I look forward to seeing you on the trails ahead!
I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy the day with loved ones, maybe indulge in some turkey and pumpkin pie for good tradition, and reflect upon the meaning of the holiday.

For those of you who'll be in the Twin Cities on Saturday, December 1, there's one last opportunity this year to see my work or pick up a one of my display pieces at a great price (more on that below).

Art at Ramsey

Art at Ramsey is a high-quality juried art and fine craft event that takes place Saturday, December 1 (from 10am – 5pm) inside the Ramsey Middle School gymnasiums and cafeteria at 1700 Summit Avenue in Saint Paul, MN. I will be among about 80 regional artists exhibiting work, so there is a good variety of talent to see if you visit.

Gift Certificate Sale

This year, to celebrate Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, I'm offering a very rare opportunity for you to purchase gift certificates at a 10% discount. Purchase $50 certificates for $45 or $100 certificates for $90. These certificates do not expire and are good toward any future regular-priced artwork purchase (at my art fair booth, online, or by phone/email). They make great gifts, especially since artwork can be hard to buy for others. And, if you decide to purchase a few for yourself...I won't tell anyone! :)

There is no limit to the number of certificates you can buy, but overall quantities are limited. This sale goes live at 8pm Thanksgiving and runs through Saturday, November 24, unless sold out sooner. All certificates will be mailed to the address provided at checkout.

Year-End Display Piece Sale

Near the end of the year, as many of you know, I typically offer a selection of my art
fair display pieces at discounted prices to make room for new release work in the coming year. These are generally pieces that have
traveled with me and have been displayed at shows for the past 1-4
years. As a result, they may have minor flaws or may not be quite as
squeaky clean as a brand new piece. However, most are in excellent
condition.

If you are interested in the availability or condition of a particular piece, please feel free to contact me (dbarthel@northshoreimages.com or 320-293-1788). Shipping is either free or low cost to most locations in the Upper Midwest. Any piece not sold prior to December 1 will be available at Art at Ramsey as noted above.
"Souls of Superior" – Tettegouche State Park, Minnesota, USA

On October 10, 2018, a powerful Lake Superior storm slammed huge surf against the cliffs on the North Shore. Actual waves reached as high as 20 feet, causing damage to Duluth's
Lakewalk and other structures throughout the region. A freighter on the
lake that day, about 20 miles from where I made this image, recorded a wind gust of 86
miles per hour! One month later, evidence of this powerful storm is
still seen with piles of driftwood planted onto some beaches. These were certainly the largest waves I've ever witnessed on Lake Superior (or anywhere, for that matter)!
Each year, Split Rock Lighthouse lights its beacon in commemoration of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Nov. 10, 1975.

This year, I enjoyed the view with a few other people from atop Day
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but here goes...

It's Labor Day today, and that means that summer is (unofficially) over. There's a silver lining...fall is a wonderful time of year to get out and enjoy the cool, crisp air and visit some of the great art festivals that take place.

Admittedly, this summer's weather has been challenging at times for outdoor events. It seemed as though if liquid wasn't falling from the sky, its vaporized cousin accompanied plenty of heat. There were a few very pleasant days that somehow happened to converge with a weekend, though, and hopefully many more to come this fall.

My schedule has pretty much solidified for the remainder of the year with six events on the calendar (Red Wing is still tentative). This is a great time of the year to start thinking about any redecorating you want to get done before the upcoming holiday season.
The best thing to do at the Minnesota State Fair (besides, perhaps, gorging on copious calories from the requisite corn dogs, cheese curds, and chocolate chip cookies—okay, maybe not) is checking out all of the fascinating artwork displayed in the Fine Arts Center.

My photograph, Evolution, was accepted for display in this year's Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition!
Roughly 100 photographs were selected from over 1,000 photography
entries which were displayed alongside other art mediums in the state fair's
Fine Arts Building during the fair, August 23 through September 3. The state fair exhibit is Minnesota's largest annual juried arts exhibition and accepts entries from artists throughout the state.

I am told that the piece has been purchased, but will remain on display through the close of the fair today (Labor Day). You can also see a larger framed canvas print of this image in my booth at the art fairs I'll be attending this fall.
Sensations of Superior – North Shore of Lake Superior near Covill, Minnesota

There are a number of offshore small islands and rocks that dot the landscape of Lake Superior's North Shore. Few are as beautiful is this one, with its lovely grouping of trees, situated several miles northeast of Grand Marais, MN. Given the incredible nature of this place, I am a bit ashamed to admit that I had only visited it one other time (about five years ago) before making this image last fall.

On this recent visit, the conditions were about as good as I could ask for. The sunrise was brilliant, and good-sized waves were lapping at the rocky coast. I love showcasing the energy of the lake in my photographs and choose shutter speeds that convey this feeling in a visually pleasing way. The sun gives this image a strong visual metaphor as it is the source of [almost] all light and energy here on Earth.
Here are a few of the new images that I've had the opportunity to complete so far this year:

Evolution – Onyx Beach, Lake Superior, USA

<span class="fbPhotosPhotoCaption" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="fbPhotoSnowliftCaption" tabindex="0">From crashing waves to painterly wildflowers and glorious sunrises, Lake
Superior's North Shore is full of iconic treasures, and I love
photographing them. However, little-known scenes like this really stir
my creative soul, and I strive to see them in a unique way.

This particular location had waves crashing in from both sides (I was
on a narrow tombolo). It took just the right combination of waves to
make this image work. The tree growing from the rocks is an American mountain-ash. If you look carefully, you can see those bright red berries that this species of tree is known for.
As the season transforms from the hustle and bustle of racing to the store for that last-minute gift, sealing dozens of envelopes full of greeting cards, and pulling that last batch of cookies out of the oven to spending quality time with loved ones and engaging in activities we enjoy, I want to take a moment to wish you a joyous holiday season and thank you for another amazing year!
I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy the day with loved ones, maybe indulge in some turkey and pumpkin pie, and reflect upon the meaning of the holiday.

For those of you who'll be in the Twin Cities on Saturday, December 2, there's one last opportunity this year to see my work or pick up a one of my display pieces at a great price (more on that below...it's kind of like my version of Black Friday).

Art at Ramsey

Art at Ramsey is a high-quality juried art and fine craft event that takes place Saturday, December 2 (from 10am – 5pm) inside the Ramsey Middle School gymnasiums and cafeteria at 1700 Summit Avenue in Saint Paul, MN. I will be among about 80 regional artists exhibiting work, so there is a good variety of talent to see if you visit.

Year-End Display Piece Sale

Near the end of the year, I typically offer a selection of my art
fair display pieces at discounted prices. These are generally pieces that have
traveled with me and have been displayed at shows for the past 1-4
years. As a result, they may have minor flaws or may not be quite as
squeaky clean as a brand new piece. However, most are in excellent
condition. Others are overstock pieces or prints in overstock frames.

If you are interested in the availability or condition of a particular piece, please feel free to contact me (dbarthel@northshoreimages.com or 320-293-1788). Shipping is either free or low cost to most locations in the Upper Midwest. Any piece not sold prior to December 2 will be available at Art at Ramsey as noted above.

Many thanks to everyone who has visited us at an art festival this year! It has been an interesting season with regard to weather, but overall, the year has been a good one. We have fully recovered from that powerful storm back in mid-June in Excelsior that walloped our booth.

Our art fair schedule for the remainder of the year is now solidified. If you haven't yet visited us this year, we welcome you to stop in at one of the following events and see my latest work.
Please come and visit if you are in any of these areas. We will return to the Twin Cities in August for the Uptown Art Fair.
Along with about 150 other artists, I had my photography

This year's art fair schedule is gearing up to be very similar to last year's, with a couple of differences. Most notably, I will be returning this year to the Old Capitol Art Fair in Springfield, Illinois, which is less than a month away. Panther Creek Falls – Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Washington, USA

This is possibly one of most beautiful waterfalls I have had the chance to experience and photograph! Its "fan" shape and setting deep within a lush, mossy gorge make this falls truly spectacular and refreshing! There is a viewing platform that overlooks the falls from above, but reaching this vantage point at the base of the falls required scrambling down a steep slope.

This image is not "quite" finished yet (I'm still tweaking a few details), but I anticipate it will be available when art fair season begins!David Barthelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02189766787701090849noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5013523789924122022.post-55511741430909282922017-03-27T08:18:00.004-05:002017-04-17T04:45:39.050-05:00Spring Art Fair Schedule and A Few New ImagesSpring greetings everyone!

Before I get into the main content of this brief newsletter, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has and continues to invest in my work as a fine art photographer. Preparing my tax returns for 2016 has reminded me how remarkably successful the last year has been for us. I am truly grateful that so many people, like you, take an interest in and value the work I create. Surely, Uncle Sam will be happy too! :)

The art fair schedule gets off to an early start this year, with our first event, 60 Artists on 50th, held at Burroughs Community School in southwest Minneapolis on Saturday, April 1st—no fooling! The schedule below represents what's happening through mid-June. The May events are currently tentative, and any changes will be announced as they occur. A more complete schedule for the summer will be announced within the next month at www.northshoreimages.com/Schedule and in a separate newsletter.
"Superior Awakening" – near Hovland, Minnesota, USA

This is an image that I kept under wraps for several months, and I am happy to finally let it see the light of day.

I've photographed this secluded bay and island on Lake Superior's North
Shore a few times before making this image last October. On one of my
attempts several years ago, I witnessed a glorious sunrise...only to
discover that my lone camera battery had died. I now carry five
batteries with me so that you don't miss an opportunity to experience
the beauty nature shares with me!

"Lunar Light II" – Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, Minnesota, USA

Those of you who have followed my work for some time know that I regularly make the trip to Split Rock Lighthouse each January to photograph the full moon rising behind the cliff and lighthouse. This year, mostly clear skies prevailed, resulting in this scene with Earth's shadow (known as the Belt of Venus) casting a slight pinkish glow in the upper sky of this image.

This also happens to be the first landscape image made with my new Canon 5D Mark IV camera body. It replaces my 8-year old Canon 5D Mark II and represents many of the latest advancements in imaging technology. One interesting feature is the ability to send an image captured with the camera directly to a smartphone for editing and sharing with the world, all within minutes of pressing the shutter button! I look forward to getting out in the field with it more and sharing new images with you as we head into spring!
I hope you have an opportunity to spend some time with the people in your life for which you are thankful and indulge in whatever makes the holiday special for you.

For those of you who'll be in the Twin Cities on Saturday, December 3, there's one more opportunity this year to see my work or pick up a one of my display pieces at a great price (more on that below).

Art at Ramsey

Art at Ramsey is a high-quality juried art and fine craft event that takes place Saturday, December 3 (from 10am – 5pm) inside the Ramsey Middle School gymnasiums and cafeteria at 1700 Summit Avenue in Saint Paul. I will be among about 70 regional artists exhibiting work, so there is plenty to see if you visit.

Year-End Display Piece Sale

Near the end of the year, I typically offer a selection of my art
fair display pieces at discounted prices. These are pieces that have
traveled with me and have been displayed at shows for the past 1-3
years. As a result, they may have minor flaws or may not be quite as
squeaky clean as a brand new piece. However, most are in excellent
condition.

If you are interested in the availability or condition of a particular piece, please feel free to contact me (dbarthel@northshoreimages.com or 320-293-1788). Shipping is free to most locations in the Upper Midwest. Any piece not sold prior to December 3 will be available at Art at Ramsey as noted above.

I know, I know! It's hard to believe that in less than a month, we will be in the midst of fall color season here in Minnesota and the Upper Midwest. For me, it's even harder to believe that I'll be packing up my outdoor art fair canopy, for the last time this year, in just a little over three weeks.

If you haven't had a chance yet this year to check out my newest work, here are some remaining opportunities. These are events I will be exhibiting my work at through the end of the year:

September 10-11 - Wausau Festival of Arts - Downtown, Wausau, WI (Booth #400)

September 17-18 - Lakeville Art Festival - Lakeville, MN

September 25 - Millstream Arts Festival - Downtown, St. Joseph, MN

October 1-2 - Fall Fine Art and Music Festival - North Lowell Park, Stillwater, MN

December 3 - Art at Ramsey - Ramsey Middle School (Indoors), Saint Paul, MN

I hope to see you soon!
I intend to have well over two dozen new photographs available by the beginning of June. About half of them are from Lake Superior's North Shore region, with the other half from several locations in the American West.

Here are the eight most recent of these photographs:

Duc River as it makes its way toward the Pacific Ocean. The temperate rainforests in this area
receive around 150 inches of precipitation each year, which contributes to all of the
mosses and ferns and other lush vegetation that thrive here.
<span class="fbPhotosPhotoCaption" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="fbPhotoSnowliftCaption" tabindex="0">
A little note:
Normally, I like to keep stray branches and such outside of the frame of
my composition, as they tend to distract from the main subject. Here,
there was no way to avoid it (without falling off a ledge and into the river), so I made an exception. I still like the
overall mood of the image.
such quiet and beautiful locations, I feel grateful to the visionary
leaders of the past century for preserving these unique parcels of land
along Lake Superior and elsewhere for all of us to enjoy.<span class="fbPhotosPhotoCaption" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="fbPhotoSnowliftCaption" tabindex="0">

This
is an often photographed view in Zion National Park...and for good
reason! The relatively plentiful rainfall in Zion Canyon, for
a desert region, keeps the Virgin River flowing and the surrounding
plant life thriving. It is like an oasis in the middle of the desert!
Of course, I would have loved to have had dramatic sunset light on the
clouds above the Watchman peaks for this image, but I actually kind of
like the deep blue of the rain clouds that were slowly moving into the
area. The blue color was reflected by the Virgin River's surface,
contributing to the feeling of springtime lushness in the valley. Indeed, within a
couple of hours after capturing this image, a spring storm moved in and
it started raining!

something a little different from me. I made this image along
Washington's Pacific Coast at Rialto Beach during a spring evening with a

Yes, this is different than my usual style. I think my "fine art" brain

Greetings everyone!

This update is packed with new images that I have completed over the winter so far. Grab your favorite beverage and begin scrolling down!

I also wanted to mention to those of you in central Minnesota that my photography is currently on exhibit at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN through the month of February. The 18-piece display is located on the first floor near the chapel and can be visited anytime during regular hours. (It looks even better in person—I promise!)David Barthelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02189766787701090849noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5013523789924122022.post-39516062986899193042016-02-15T07:11:00.002-06:002016-02-15T07:37:36.818-06:00New Photographs from Minnesota and the American WestAs a photographer who participates in numerous art festivals during the summer and fall, I often find winter to be the quieter and slower-paced time of the year. The hustle of hours on the road and setting up a big white tent is traded for the comparatively relaxed and deliberate pace of culling and processing new work from some of the best photographs I have made over the past few years. It's a balance that I've come to enjoy.

This winter, I have been a bit more diligent in completing new work than I have been in past winters. Below are thirteen new images, in no particular order, that I've completed since my last update in December. I hope to have at least that many more ready to go before the 2016 art fair season begins in May.
participate in the Blueberry Arts Festival. On two consecutive evenings while
I was there, I visited these falls at the edge of the Boundary Waters
Canoe Area Wilderness. On the first evening, the conditions did not
cooperate for the image I had in mind, but it was good scouting
opportunity for the second evening...when I was able to make this image!

I really liked how the curving cloud boundary in the western sky matched the curvature of the falls, albeit in an inverse fashion.
a humbling experience to walk among these ancient, weathered trees which thrive in some of the harshest environments, at about 10,000 feet in elevation in the White Mountains of California.

I had also anticipated doing some night photography in this location,
but a couple of circumstances hindered that plan. First, clouds obscured
the night sky for most of the time while I was in the area. Also, not
long after making this image, I fell ill with what seemed to be a
digestive bug and was pretty much confined to my motel for 24 hours.
Despite my short visit to this grove, I was happy to bring this image
back.
I made the trek to Split Rock Lighthouse last month with hopes of
once again seeing and photographing the annual moonrise behind the
iconic Lake Superior lighthouse. The clouds did not part enough, for the
100+ eager photographers present, to get a glimpse of the glowing lunar
orb, but there was still plenty to photograph, including a rare winter beacon lighting!

I found much beauty in the ice formations along the shore. There is a
lot to take in within this image, but if you know some of the basic
compositional guidelines, it really is an organized chaos.

For the photography nerds among us: the
shore ice and incoming waves form a "leading line" that guides the
viewer toward the somewhat distant cliff-perched lighthouse. "Counterpoint" is
another technique used here to balance the composition. The subject of interest is
the lighthouse, and the bottom-right cutout shape in the ice serves as a counterpoint. Finally, did you notice the similarity between the
cutout shape in the near ice and the shape of the opening in the clouds
above the lighthouse?

few frames before the rainbow quickly faded along with the delicate morning light.

Here's an interesting rainbow tidbit: if you imagine a rainbow
completing the full circle below the horizon, the center point of that
circle is exactly opposite, or 180 degrees from, the sun. That's why we
don't see rainbows in the sky during the middle of the day. And yes, rainbows really are complete circles—we only see about half of a rainbow because of our usual vantage point in relation to the geography.
The tree is trimmed, the cookies are baked, and snow is on the
ground (okay, just a tiny little bit). By official standards, we won't
have a white Christmas this year where I live in Minnesota (neither did
we last year), but at least the days are getting longer!

It seems not so long ago that I composed my last holiday greeting. Now a
few years into my thirties (that ticked up one notch yesterday), it
feels like years now pass like months did when I was a kid. Priorities
have changed too. A wish list for more material goods have been (mostly)
replaced by dreams of experiences, especially those that enrich our
lives and the lives of others.

As the holiday hustle and bustle
transitions to celebration and reflection this evening, I want to take
this time to thank everyone for your support over the past year. It was
my most successful year in most every measure. My goal with photography
is to enrich the lives of others with my interpretation of the natural
world through my lens. Your support, whether it is through purchasing
prints of my work to display in your home or simply being an active part
of my online community, helps give my life meaning. You are all like
one big extended family.

Exciting experiences await us in
the upcoming year, both for me and for you. I look forward to having you
along for the journey.

My warm wishes to you on this Christmas Eve for a happy holiday season and peaceful Earth.

New Work

Here are a few images I've completed in the past couple of months...

North Shore Aurora – Palisade Head, Minnesota, USA

Every fall, I make a point of spending several days hiking and
camping along Lake Superior's rugged north shore, usually in search of
the ephemeral autumn colors that so gracefully adorn the region. Yet, so
often it seems, my best photographs result from unplanned moments not
related at all to the fall colors.

That was again the case one evening this fall. Around midnight, I was just about ready to crawl into my warm sleeping
bag when I saw the telltale glow on the northern horizon...and it was
bright! I knew that one of the highest points overlooking Superior
happened to be just a few miles away. Minutes later, I found myself at
the base of Palisade Head's one-lane winding road that leads to the
top—head lamp, tripod, and backpack in tow. The gate was locked, as it
usually is after dark, which meant a brisk quarter-mile hike uphill to
the top was in order.

Over
the course of the next two hours, I watched in awe as the magical light
drifted and pulsated across the northern sky from my solitary perch at
the edge of a 150-foot cliff. This image was made just before 2 AM, near
the end of my two-hour-long stay. I used my headlamp to illuminate the
nearby cliff face to add some context and dimension to the scene.
Gooseberry and the Galaxy – Gooseberry Falls State Park, Minnesota, USA

I made this image on a clear, moonless night earlier this fall
at Gooseberry Falls near Lake Superior. You can see the faint band of
our own Milky Way galaxy above and to the right of the falls.

The
part of the Milky Way visible above the falls is opposite in direction
to the galactic core and therefore does not have the bright,
highly-visible nebulae that you see in some images of our galaxy. It is rather more like a concentrated band stars with very faint visible gases.

To illuminate the falls in the darkness, I used my headlamp to "paint"
light throughout the scene, emphasizing the most important areas.
Mountain Goat Gaze – Glacier National Park, Montana, USA

As most of you may know, I typically shoot landscapes and rarely
photograph wildlife, so this is something a little different from me. I
happened to be in an area with several mountain goats meandering about
and simply could not resist!

This one must be fairly young, as it's horns are just starting to develop. Or, maybe they shed and regrow them periodically...I don't know for sure.
